Inspiration: Local Flavors & Favorite Creatures

Every charm in my collection tells a story rooted in Apalachicola’s unique blend of wildlife and waterfront fare. This year, the choice came down to two hometown icons: the alligator and the blue crab. Though the vote was tight, the crab emerged triumphant—its delicate pincers and jaunty shell speaking directly to our collective love of sandy beach days and seafood feasts.

For me, the blue crab embodies that perfect summer memory: laughter echoing over a steamy pot boil, salt air teasing your hair, and the thrill of spotting those striped shells scuttling along the tide line.

Crafting the Charm: Collaboration with Tara Magboo

Bringing the Blue Crab Charm from concept to keepsake was a true team effort. When I need specialized skills—like microscopic wax carving—I turn to my friend and artisan extraordinaire, Tara Magboo. Here’s how our collaboration unfolded:

1. Gathering Local References:

   To ensure this charm felt unmistakably Apalachicola, I sent Tara photos of blue crabs.

2. Sketching & Feedback:

   Tara transformed those images into fine-lined sketches, each capturing the crab’s lively stance and shell texture. We exchanged ideas via email and phone calls until every claw and curve felt just right.

3. Micro Wax Carving:

   Under a microscope, Tara carved the approved design in green wax, applying her signature attention to detail to replicate shell ridges, leg joints, and the playful tilt of the claws.

4. Master to Mold:

   She has the wax cast in silver and further refines it. Then a mold is made of the silver “master”.

5. Metal Casting & Finishing:

   Using the lost-wax process, we cast charms in .925 sterling silver and solid 14K gold. Each casting is clean in-house.

Seeing the first of the polished crabs was pure magic—each one shimmering with life and sparkle.
