Reflecting on Tucson 2022: Preparing for an Inspiring 2025 Gem Show

Attending the Tucson Gem Show in 2022 was a memorable experience that left a lasting impact on my creative journey. As I look ahead to the 2025 show, I can’t help but reflect on how that visit shaped my approach to selecting and curating gemstones for my jewelry.

Nearly three years later, I’m looking forward to returning with fresh insights and a clearer vision of how this experience will continue to enhance my work and bring value to you, my clients.

A Transformative First Experience

Attending the Tucson Gem Show for the first time in 2014 was a real eye-opener. Walking into the expansive venue and seeing row after row of vendors was both exhilarating and overwhelming. With a modest budget and a low credit card limit, I quickly realized the importance of strategizing my purchases. Navigating through the multitude of options required not only patience but also a keen eye for quality and uniqueness.

One of the most significant lessons I learned was the value of seeing gemstones in person. Being able to inspect and compare them firsthand is invaluable. There’s something magical about holding a gemstone, feeling its weight, and marveling at its unique facets and colors up close. This tactile experience is something you simply can't replicate online.

Additionally, meeting vendors face-to-face fostered personal connections that are essential when you usually purchase jewelry online. For instance, my interactions with Columbia Gem House were exceptional. Their outstanding customer service and the opportunity to meet some of their wonderful staff in person made me love buying from them even more. These relationships ensure that each stone I select is chosen with care and confidence, directly benefiting the quality and integrity of the pieces I create for you.

Discovering Hidden Treasures

The Tucson Gem Show was also a treasure trove of materials I hadn't previously sought out. I was introduced to materials like Mediterranean coral, South Sea pearls, and even freshwater pearls grown in the Tennessee River! Discovering these materials expanded my horizons and inspired me to incorporate them into my designs. The show also showcased antique diamonds, adding a touch of timeless elegance to my collections.

Coral

One of the most surprising discoveries was finding a vendor that sells pearls grown in the United States, particularly in the South. I had no idea that pearl cultivation was thriving here, and these locally-grown pearls are not only beautiful but also resonate well with my clientele, given our geographic location. These pearls are truly lovely and fascinating, adding a unique story to each piece they adorn.

Another highlight was seeing vast collections of moonstones. Their beauty is truly captivating, especially when laid on a black background, which intensifies their colors. Inspired by this, I now often back moonstones with oxidized silver or other black materials to enhance their natural allure. This technique not only makes the stones appear more saturated but also adds a striking contrast that elevates the overall design.

Unique pearl

The coral branches, lagniappe pearls, baroque pearls, and various types of moonstones—such as blue flash and rainbow varieties—have all found a place in my designs. Their intense colors and distinctive characteristics add depth and vibrancy to my pieces.

Shaping My Perspective on Jewelry Design

Seeing all these materials firsthand allowed me to better identify quality and avoid the pitfalls of low-quality stones that are often present, even in high-end trade shows.

The abundance of high-quality stones reinforced my commitment to sustainability and ethical sourcing. It became clear that choosing the right materials is crucial not only for the aesthetic appeal of the jewelry but also for the stories they tell and the values they represent. This commitment ensures that every piece I create for you is not only beautiful but also ethically sound and meaningful.

Memorable Interactions and Heartwarming Moments

Among the many interactions at the show in 2022, one stands out vividly. I met a kind gentleman selling Mediterranean coral, and as I sifted through branches, I found one adorned with a charming barnacle. I probably squealed with delight! He immediately jumped in to help me find a few other pieces in the piles.

This interaction was not only fun but also inspiring. It reminded me of the joy and serendipity that come with creating something beautiful. The coral I selected from that encounter became a pair of unique earrings, turning a simple purchase into a cherished addition to my collection.

These memorable interactions reinforce the importance of building meaningful relationships within the gemstone community. They enrich my experience and ensure that I can provide you with jewelry crafted with care, passion, and a deep understanding of each gemstone’s unique characteristics.

Advice for First-Time Attendees

Reflecting on my first experience in 2022, I have some valuable advice for anyone attending the Tucson Gem Show for the very first time:

  1. Preparation is Key: Print out the show’s map and circle the vendors you absolutely must see. Make a list of stones you’ve purchased from each vendor previously and note their prices to keep an eye on inevitable inflation.
  2. Comfort Matters: Wear comfortable shoes and layer your clothing to adapt to the varying temperatures inside the exhibition halls.
  3. Stay Organized: Bring a backpack or a bag with multiple zippered pockets to keep your purchases secure and organized.
  4. Stay Nourished: Pack snacks—something like a protein bar—and plenty of water, as vendors often charge premium prices for food and beverages within the shows.
